Client Note
"Studio Aangan gave us a home that feels like a warm hug. The courtyard is where our family life happens now. It’s exactly what we dreamed of when we decided to move back."
The Brief
The clients, a family of four returning to India after a decade abroad, wanted a home that felt deeply rooted in local context while offering the openness they were accustomed to. The brief called for a space that could host large family gatherings but also provide quiet, contemplative corners.
The Challenge
The original structure was a dark, compartmentalized 1980s build. We needed to open it up, bring in natural light, and introduce a central focal point without compromising the structural integrity of the old house.
Our Response
We carved out a central 'aangan' (courtyard) that acts as the lung of the house. By opening up the roof with a skylight and using traditional terracotta jali screens, we transformed the darkest part of the home into a luminous, breathable core.
The Result
A sprawling yet intimate villa where every room maintains a visual connection to the courtyard. The interplay of teak, terrazzo, and light creates a sanctuary that feels miles away from the bustling streets of Indiranagar.
